How to buy physical gold in Mexico safely

By Carlos Montejano, founder of Gold Shield

Short answer: in Mexico you can safely buy physical gold from banks (large formats), specialized dealers, and established jeweler-workshops. The rule that never fails: nobody sells gold below the metal's value — if the "deal" is under the day's price per gram, it's a scam. You can start today from 1 gram (~$3,500 MXN) instead of an $85,000 centenario coin.

Where can you buy physical gold in Mexico?

I've been melting and working gold in my workshop since 2018, and I get this question every week. The real options are four: banks and the Mexican Mint (centenario coins and ounces, $85,000 MXN and up), specialized online dealers (bars, usually 5-gram minimums), marketplaces (everything, including plenty of fraud), and jeweler-workshops selling the metal directly. At Gold Shield we sell .999 fine gold by the gram, in bulk from 1 gram, plus certified PAMP Suisse gold bars for those who prefer a sealed assay card with a serial number.

Rule #1 before buying: know the metal price

The most expensive mistake I see is buying without knowing what a gram is worth that day. Gold is priced daily by the international market and the exchange rate; any serious seller lets you compare. Before paying a peso, check the daily gold price per gram in Mexico (we update it every morning at Gold Shield, calculator included). With that number in hand, no "miracle promo" can fool you: real gold is never sold below its metal value.

Which format is right: bulk gold, Swiss bar, or centenario?

My honest advice as a manufacturer: for your first purchase, start with 1 gram. Bulk pays less per gram; certified resells more easily. And if you run a jewelry workshop, the same fine gold works as casting grain — that's how we use it daily.

How I verify gold in my workshop (and how you can too)

At Gold Shield every piece goes through spectrometry and a precision scale, but some checks anyone can do: pure gold doesn't stick to a magnet, it weighs far more than it looks (19.3 g/cm³, nearly double silver), and certified pieces come in a sealed assay card with a verifiable serial number. If a seller won't weigh the piece in front of you or let you verify the certificate, walk away.

The 5 most common gold scams in Mexico

1) "Investment gold" at pawn shops: you're buying used jewelry, paying for design, not metal. 2) The miracle price: "24k gold at 50% off" is mathematically impossible without fraud. 3) Gold-plated sold as investment: laminated or plated gold is decoration, not investment. 4) The bar without a certificate "because it's cheaper": without the sealed card or a verifiable seller there's no good resale. 5) The ghost seller on social media: no address, no track record, no invoice — no matter how nice the photos look.

How much gold should you buy first?

Less than you think: the beauty of modern physical gold is you no longer need $85,000 to start. With ~$3,500 MXN you get your first gram of pure gold; with ~$5,000, your first certified Swiss bar. Buying gram by gram, monthly, averages your entry price and removes the pressure of timing the market perfectly.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to buy physical gold in Mexico?

Completely. Investment gold of .999 purity or higher is even VAT-exempt. Purchases above $15,000 MXN are reported to the tax authority (SAT) by the seller — that's a sign of a formal business, not a problem.

How much does a gram of pure gold cost today?

It changes daily with the market. Check today's number on Gold Shield's gold price page; as a reference, retail for 1 gram of bulk fine gold is around $3,500 MXN.

What is a "crédito suizo" (Swiss credit)?

It's what Mexicans call the small pure-gold bar minted in Switzerland (PAMP being the best-known brand), sealed in a blister with an assay certificate and serial number. It's the easiest format to resell.

Can bulk gold be resold?

Yes: jewelers and refiners buy it by weight at the day's price. It resells with less formality than a certified bar, which is why it costs less to buy.

Where should I store my gold?

Small amounts: an anchored safe or a non-obvious hiding spot, each piece in its own pouch, and total discretion. For large amounts, a bank safe-deposit box.

Gold bars or a centenario coin?

The centenario is a great heirloom piece but demands $85,000+ upfront. Starting by the gram gives you the same purity with accessible tickets and partial liquidity: you can sell 2 grams without touching the rest.

That's why at my workshop, Gold Shield, we publish the gold price every day and sell from 1 gram: so buying gold stops being a privilege — and stops being a trap.
